  • The director of the Galicia Europa Foundation office in Brussels opened today the seventh meeting of the virtual meetings cycle “FGE | Next Generation Galicia”, in which she highlighted the strong Galician commitment to the achievement of the objectives set in the European Green Pact.
  • During the meeting, a large representation of the Xunta was able to address, with a representative of the European Commission, the new legislative package “Objective 55”, the intermediate step to achieve climate neutrality in 2050.

Brussels, September 29th, 2021. After the summer season, the director of the Galicia Europa Foundation office in Brussels, Ana Ramos, opened today the cycle of virtual meetings “FGE | Next Generation Galicia”, in which the Xunta and the European Commission resumed their usual monthly contact, on this occasion, to address the set of proposals contained in the “Objective 55”, the legislative package launched by the European Commission last July.

During her speech, Ana Ramos welcomed the participants and emphasized the clear Galician commitment to become a reference region in the implementation of the European Green Pact, the EU growth strategy that seeks to achieve climate neutrality in 2050, through the implementation of initiatives such as the Galician Climate Change and Energy Strategy 2050, the Galician Circular Economy Strategy for the period 2020-2030 or the commitment made by the Galicia Europa Foundation itself with the European Climate Pact.

Afterwards, and with a view to achieving the climate objectives, a large representation of the Xunta was able to delve, together with the deputy head of unit in the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission, Yolanda García Mezquita, into the contents of “Objective 55”, which covers areas such as renewable energies, emissions trading, energy taxation or emissions from passenger cars.

The purpose of this legislative package is to promote, by 2030, a reduction of at least 55% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels, as a preliminary step towards achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Cycle of virtual meetings Xunta-EU of the FGE

First under the name “Galicia in the EU economic recovery” and now as ” FGE | Next Generation Galicia”, the cycle of virtual meetings of the FGE has addressed, since its launch in September 2020, numerous issues of relevance to Galicia such as the green transition, the Industrial Strategy for Europe or the future cohesion policy 2021-2027.

These meetings are attended by policy makers and technicians from the departments of the Xunta and the European Commission. With the change of name, the FGE wants to underline the role it is playing to provide technical support to the Next Generation Galicia Commission, created by the Galician Government to identify projects that can be financed by the European recovery instrument NextGeneration EU.
