— The director of the Fundación Galicia Europa in Brussels inaugurated a new meeting of the ‘Encontros virtuais Xunta-UE’ cycle, dedicated to this one-stop shop that seeks to strengthen the EU’s industrial competitiveness

— With this session, the FGE’s initiative that brings together representatives of the Galician administration and EU institutions to discuss EU policies celebrates its fourth year

Brussels, 18th of September 2024. The director of the Brussels office of Fundacion Galicia Europa, Ana Ramos, opened the first meeting after the summer break of the cycle ‘Encontros virtuais Xunta-UE’, the discussion forum between the Galician government and the European institutions. The session was useful to analyse the opportunities offered by the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP), a one-stop shop that seeks to help strengthen the EU’s industrial competitiveness while reducing external dependencies. In her opening remarks, the director advocated the presence and participation of the regions in initiatives such as this, within the framework of the ‘do no harm to EU cohesion’ principle.

STEP promotes clean and resource-efficient technologies, digital technologies and deep-tech innovation and biotechnologies. The platform mobilises funds through 11 European programmes, including the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), InvestEU or the structural funds. The initiative was born in the light of the last crisis, but its continuity cannot be dismissed, as the von der Leyen administration will try to strike a balance between boosting green transition and promoting competitiveness in this new mandate.

In today’s meeting, the European vision was provided by Carlos Arsuaga and Irati Icardo, policy officers in the STEP task force. The Galician perspective and experience was provided by Ángel Tarrío, Director General of Cohesion and European Funds.

Four years of Encontros virtuais Xunta-UE

With this session, the ‘Encontros virtuais Xunta-UE’ cycle celebrates four years of bringing together the Galician Government and representatives of the European institutions. This initiative by Fundación Galicia Europa arose in the context of the health crisis, to report on the EU’s response and the design of the 21-27 programming period, and evolved into a monthly forum to discuss issues on the EU agenda relevant to Galicia. Since then, more than 500 representatives of the Galician administration have participated in the more than 40 meetings organised so far.
