— Fundación Galicia Europa, representing the regional government of Galicia in Brussels, took part in the political meeting of the Atlantic Arc Commission
Brussels, March 3th 2023. The Director of the Fundación Galicia Europa office in Brussels, Ana Ramos, participated in the political meeting of the Atlantic Arc Commission of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) that took place in the Belgian capital. The Atlantic Arc regions met to discuss the possible creation of an Atlantic macro-region.
This macro-region would be made up of territories in Spain, Portugal, France and Ireland, as well as Wales despite not being part of the European Union, and would join other existing EU macro-regional strategies. The creation of the macro-region would mean establishing strategic cooperation in the Atlantic area, beyond the EU territory and beyond the current maritime strategy, to include other issues such as connectivity, clean energy, innovation, tourism and culture.
At the meeting, the different views on the form and content of this Atlantic macro-region were shared. For Galicia, the added value that an Atlantic macro-region would have was clear. Ana Ramos recalled the cooperation experience of the Southwest European regions RESOE, launched in 2010, and in which Atlantic regions of the Iberian Peninsula currently participate, highlighting the good work developed at the level of the cooperation group of the universities of the participating regions, as well as the reinforced institutional support for the Atlantic rail corridor.
